Indonesia (Lombok) food safety – mercury poisoning?

Hi all,

We're headed to Lombok in a few months and I've just watched the viral tofu video from elsewhere in Indonesia where huge amounts of plastic are burned to make the tofu. While looking into the massive burning of plastics, I also read about the extremely high use of mercury in Lombok to mine for gold and how it's poisoning the paddy fields and causing awful issues for local residents.

I'd like more information on how safe the food will be over there – we want to start trying for a baby just after so the high risk of birth defects from mercury especially is worrying me and I'm wondering if we should go somewhere else instead. Does anyone know where I can get more information? Do the local restaurants display their food chain so I can be sure I'm not eating a a ton of mercury from the gold mining runoff?

Thanks for any info!
