Last-minute change of plans

Well, our Halloweeen honeymoon in Asheville, NC and the Great Smoky Mountains seems unlikely now. In case we have to cancel, what parts of the country are pleasant at the end of October that won’t take all our money? Mountains preferred, but California is a bit too expensive for us.
