First time to Hawaii – 1-week honeymoon in October, Oahu vs. Maui help?

Hi everyone!

My partner and I are planning our first-ever trip to Hawaii this October for our honeymoon and could really use some advice. We’re planning to stay for one week, and we’re deciding between Oahu and Maui.

We’ve read a ton of posts and guides, but honestly—it’s still overwhelming. We want a mix of relaxation and touristy fun, but we’re not super outdoorsy (no long hikes or extreme adventures).

Here’s what we’re hoping for:

🌺 Trip priorities: • Lots of beach time to relax and enjoy the scenery • Food is a big deal for us – we love trying local eats, casual spots, and some special dinners too • Would love to do a sunset cruise, luau, and light snorkeling (we’ve never snorkeled before!) • A spa day would be amazing for the honeymoon feel • Prefer walkable areas, close to food, beach, and things to do • Hoping to avoid renting a car the whole time, or maybe just for 1-2 days max

🏝️ Which island is better for this kind of trip—Oahu or Maui?

We’ve heard: • Oahu (maybe Waikiki) is more walkable and has tons to do • Maui feels more relaxing but may require a car more often

We’re also trying to stay within a reasonable budget, not ultra-luxury, but something clean, comfy, and honeymoon-worthy.
