We went to Greece for the last week of August and the first week of September. I would say this was amazing timing. This was one of our bucket list destinations.
Santorini (3 days):
We liked Santorini. We stayed in Megalochori Μεγαλοχώρι, in an Airbnb. It felt like we were only with locals. Had our own parking and a big supermarket nearby.
Beaches: our favorite was: Perissa beach, though if you do go to Kamari beach I’d recommend water shoes
Beach club: Isla Beach Bar: really good prices and we loved the service
Wine tasting: https://estateargyros.com/
Great value and experience – 20 euros for 4 different wines and a small cheese board plus a tour
Restaurants: Fratzeskos ( Fish was really good), Metaxi Mas, Yogi-gyro, but our favourite was Armeni. You need to make a reservation and they will collect you from Ammoudi bay. It is a minimum spend of €40 per person but we thought it was worth it. Though a local told us the best fish place on the island is: To Psaraki Το Ψαράκι.
Getting around: We hired a car from Sunny Cars. I’d honestly rent a car and especially if you are not staying in Fira and Oia. Parking was not always immediately available but we did always find a spot. We got a rental car for almost 4 days from AutoNation through Sunny Cars. Florin helped us with everything. They pick you up from the airport terminal and take you to the rental office. He set it up right by the front door and within about 7 minutes we were on our way.
Milos (5 days):
Milos was one of the best islands. Every Greek we met, was so happy we did this island. You should try coming within the next 3-5 years as you can see it will become very busy.
Accommodation: Hotel Milos Sea Resort:https://www.booking.com/hotel/gr/hotel-milos-resort.html
We stayed here and I cannot recommend it enough. It was one of the best stays we have ever done. The service, the rooms had their own private pool. Spacious and a superb layout. The food was incredible, the chef Ms.Margarita was a real gem. She does all local greek dishes from scratch. Everything from bread to Granola. Eli the host was superb, she really made it feel like home.
Getting around: Cedrus Car rental https://www.milos-rentacar.gr/
This rental agency is on-site and again next level service. He picked us up right by the port. The car was ready for us at the hotel and did the transfer back to port when we left. Everything was 5 stars
Restaurants: O! Hamos! You cannot make a reservation and it about a 20-45 minute wait if you come after 7. I think it’s less of a wait during lunch. I’d highly recommend getting the piglet. Medusa is nice but it is mostly for the view. It feels that they want you to be out of there as much as possible .Glaronisia was lovely and felt local and traditional.
Beaches: Sarakiniko beach, especially for Sunrise and cliff jumping. Arrive before 6:25 as there will be some other people We went to Aqua Loca Beach Club it was – 70€ for the two of us and we really enjoyed.
Bakery: Artemis Bakery
Activities: https://www.polco-sailing.com/cruises/milos-poliegos/ . We did this with Dani, Forrest And Yiannis and it was wonderful. You cruise for 6.5~ hours and 1.5 hours of swimming. Everything is included in this day trip like SUP boards, snorkel equipment, food and snacks.
Athens (4 days):
Really wish we did Athens first. It is really such an amazing city with so much to offer in terms of sights and food. But the islands were such a high that it would’ve been better for our style of travel
Accommodation: Niche Hotel Athens. Was good but think you can find better but was close to all the sites
Getting around: We love to walk but here and there we did Taxi’s and bus ( We had the best taxi driver in history took such care of us) If you want his number please message as he was an absolute gem.
Restaurants: Volvi (best Souvlaki for us), Souvlaki Kostas, Cerdo Negro 1985 (pricer side as it is 80 euro tasting menu but it was amazing)
Museums: We loved the Acropolis, Archaeological and Olympic Museum
Beaches: We went to Bolivar Beach Bar (50 euros for two sun beds and entry), lunch was on the pricer side but it was nice for the day though it is not the cleanest
Activities: Local cooking class and a walking food tour
Ferry:
We used FerryHopper and honestly it worked so well. Both of our ferries were delayed but they moved people quick and it was a comfortable journey
TLDR: Greece is amazing for a honeymoon. I would do Athens first. Then the islands. Santorini is great if you stay outside of Fira or Oia. Milos is wonderful and Hotel Milos Sea Resort is an absolute must
