Honeymoon recommendations in SoCal?

Going on my honeymoon soon to SoCal and neither my husband or I have ever been to California. We want a few days to relax at a nice resort or hotel along the coast/near the beach but we also don’t want to break the bank.

Any recommendations for cities/areas that can accommodate an environment where it’s not too luxurious like Malibu but is also nice enough for a honeymoon? We love being able to easily walk to shops/dining but mostly want to relax. We have Laguna Beach or Newport as our top contenders right now but again, I don’t know much about California except for that it’s expensive 🙂
