Sandals Grande Antigua Honeymoon Review

We spent 7 nights at this resort and so wanted to provide a debrief of our stay.

  1. Room Choice – Not knowing a lot about the resort when we booked our stay in mid-March we called the toll free Sandals number and booked a honeymoon suite on the Caribbean side. After we checked in to our room, we realized the room we booked was not going to work for a week. Bathroom was extremely small, room was outdated and the balcony had no shade and was extremely small with little to no privacy. We headed straight down to the concierge desk and asked if they had something else available, preferably on the Mediterranean side. They said they had something available starting the next day which was the penthouse suite on the top floor. The room included the Butler Elite service each day and was $296 extra a day from what we had already paid for the honeymoon room on the Caribbean side.

  2. Butler Service – this was part of our upgrade since we got the penthouse suite so I’m not sure the actual cost breakout between how much was the room vs the butler. The room service not having to wait and having at exact time and them reserving you pool chairs each day was the best part of the service. They also set your dinner schedule at restaurants to make sure you had somewhere to go each night. Their also was a butler cocktail party one night, with only other butler service users were invited to, so was very private and fun. We tipped $20 per day at the end.

  3. Restaurants – overall very good, for breakfast we mostly did room service on our huge balcony on the top floor with coffee and would just chat about what we wanted to do that day. Lunch we had poolside and ordered through our butler, which only people with butler service could do. If you don’t have butler service, you have to go to a restaurant to eat. They don’t serve food at the pool. They had a really good pizzeria close to the pool a lot of people would go to after drinking all day at the pool. For dinner there were amazing restaurants to choose from. One one restaurant had a dress code which requires pants and a collared shirt for men. This restaurant and one other (Komonos) requires a reservation, which our butler setup on the night of our choice.

  4. Bars, pool, entertainment etc. Many bars on property from swim up at the main pool, an English pub bar called Drunken Duck and a beachside bar. The entertainment was great. Each night was live music, a Caribbean BBQ beach party, and games for couples I .e. Best dress, dancing with the stars, etc. they would give our prizes to the winning couple

  5. Excursions – we did swimming with sting rays one day at Sting Ray City in St. John. This was cool experience. Took a taxi from resort to the place where they take you out on a boat to an island where all the sting rays are. You get into the water and they are swimming by you and you get the chance to feed them. We also did a catamaran cruise that picked us up by boat on the beach at the resort and took us on a 6 hour cruise around the entire island of Antigua. We stopped at an island and got off and snorkeled and ate lunch for about 2 hours and hung at the beech. The drinks were super strong on the boat and it was a good time.

My wife and I’s experience was good. I’d give it a 8 out of 10 if I had to put it into perspective for another couple looking to do this trip. I would do Sandals again but to try something new I would try another resort on another island to get the experience.
